Week 052024.10.14-10.18 Showcase
For our band's showcase, we carefully planned and executed the display to reflect our theme and visual identity. The wall display was divided into sections to guide viewers' attention and provide a cohesive narrative. At the top, we placed our band logo, which Hajer enhanced with irregular, jumping red lines. These lines visually represented the dynamic rhythm of our music and gave the design a lively energy.
In the center of the wall, we showcased our A2 poster as the main visual focus. To complement the poster, we placed our interactive masks on one side and a QR code linking to our band's Instagram account on the other, encouraging audience interaction and online engagement. Below the wall display, we arranged a table featuring our vinyl record packaging design and an iPad displaying the motion graphics we created. This mix of physical and digital elements allowed for a more immersive audience experience.
Feedback: Our showcase received positive feedback, particularly for our thoughtful use of color, the dynamic motion graphics, and the weaving concept, which tied everything together. However, a few areas for improvement were highlighted:
Masks: It was suggested that we introduce more diverse designs for the masks to enhance variety.
Posters: Additional versions of the poster could provide more depth and options for storytelling.
Motion Graphics: Increasing the speed of the animations would better align with the energy of our music.
The feedback gave us valuable insights into areas for refinement as we continue to build our band's identity.
Inspiration from Other Bands’ Showcase Projects During the showcase, I had the chance to explore the incredible projects created by my peers. Each band brought unique creativity to their presentations, and a few stood out for their ingenuity.
One group created musical instruments from dried leaves and branches, which produced sound when swayed by the wind. The natural elements not only reflected their theme but also added an organic auditory dimension to their showcase. Another group constructed a miniature harp using zippers as strings, generating sound through the friction of sliding the zippers. This playful and unconventional approach was both innovative and captivating.
These showcases reminded me of the endless possibilities in design, where everyday materials can be reimagined in surprising ways.
Monogram Development
This week, I focused on developing my monogram design, taking it from initial sketches to refined digital versions in Illustrator. My monogram combines the letters C and R, which represent the initials of my Chinese and English names. This personal connection made the process especially meaningful.
I experimented with three distinct styles:
Minimalist Style: Using clean, geometric shapes to emphasize simplicity and balance. This style captures a modern and timeless aesthetic.
Calligraphic Style: Inspired by the fluidity of handwritten strokes, giving the design a sense of movement and personal expression.
Modern Experimental Style: Exploring bold forms, overlapping shapes, and negative space to create a contemporary and dynamic look.
Each style offered unique possibilities, and I created multiple iterations within each category. This process allowed me to explore how subtle adjustments in form, alignment, and spacing could completely transform the monogram's feel.
This exercise not only enhanced my technical skills but also deepened my understanding of how typography can reflect identity and personality. Moving forward, I aim to finalize one or two versions of the monogram that best represent my creative vision.
